Justifying International Aid
Benedict Brogan has attempted to make the case for the vastly expanded aid programme championed by Cameron that will see the amount spent on aid rise to £9.4 billion by 2015. He claims that “the sums at stake are small when overall government spending tops £700 billion a year”.
I don’t know about you Benedict, but as far as I’m concerned that’s a lot of money – all of which will be extracted from already overburdened British taxpayers. If you, and David Cameron, want to give your own money to charities doing work abroad, well, that’s fine and dandy – and commendable: but don’t expect the rest of us to applaud as the government dips its grubby hand deep into our pockets to satisfy the moral conscience of its members.
